# Mesa Phase 7 - Operating Envelope Result Note

This document records the Phase 7 operating-envelope aggregation for
[`PHASE7_SPEC.md`](PHASE7_SPEC.md). Phase 7 v1 is a read-only join over
existing Phase 3 probe-slate, Phase 4 intervention-battery, Phase 5
selection-pressure, and Phase 6 patching artifacts.

Status: Phase 7 v1 aggregation **complete**. The harness
`scripts/mesa-phase7-envelope.mjs` classifies all 22 Small/Medium Phase 5
policy-zoo rows, reports zero missing cells, carries forward the Phase 5
breach thresholds, and attaches the Phase 6 `net.7` mechanistic annotation to
the Medium cliff pair.

## 1. Summary

Phase 7 partially confirms the gravity claim in the precise operating-envelope
sense:

1. The protected pocket is real but bounded. Eight cells classify as `hold`,
   including terminal-signature at Small and Medium, and Medium L-Mixed through
   `lambda=0.95`.
2. The collapse pocket is also sharp. Seven cells classify as `collapse`,
   including Small L-Mixed at `lambda in {0.7, 0.9}`, Medium L-Mixed at
   `lambda in {0.97, 0.99}`, the Medium L-Reward anchor, and two curriculum
   variants.
3. The Medium cliff survives the full join. The breach remains localized to
   `(0.95, 0.97]`, with the Phase 5 interpolation at `lambda ~= 0.952588`
   and signature weight `1 - lambda ~= 0.047412`.
4. Phase 6 lands on the behavioral boundary. The `net.7` annotation attaches
   to the protected side at `lambda=0.95` and the collapsed side at
   `lambda=0.97`.

The strongest earned wording is therefore the roadmap's "partially holds"
version: signature-shaped and mixed controllers preserve field attachment
across a mapped pocket, but protection has a measurable selection-pressure
threshold. Above that threshold, high-reward mixed policies become fixed
attractor agents.

## 3. Class Balance

Missing cells: `0`.

Claim-support cells, interpreted narrowly as `hold`, are `8/20`
non-ambiguous rows. The collapse rows are not claim-support rows, but they are
positive envelope evidence because they identify where the same architecture
fails under stronger reward pressure.

## 4. Protected Pocket

The protected pocket contains:

The notable cell is Medium `lambda=0.95`: it is the best high-reward mixed
cell and remains field-attached immediately below the cliff.

## 5. Collapse Pocket

The collapse pocket contains:

Medium `lambda=0.97`, Medium `lambda=0.99`, and Medium L-Reward share the
same fixed-attractor class. This is the clean Phase 7 boundary: the mixed
agent is protected at `lambda=0.95`, then becomes reward-anchor-like at
`lambda=0.97`.

## 6. Breach Thresholds

From `reports/breach-threshold.csv`:

The Medium threshold is the program-significant number. Roughly five percent
signature weight is enough to prevent basin internalization in this toy family
up to the measured boundary; below that, the fixed attractor forms.

## 7. Predictions

P1 confirmed. The Medium breach remains near the Phase 5 v4 threshold after
joining nominal, probe, intervention, and Phase 6 annotations.

P2 confirmed. Terminal-signature is the forward L-Signature canonical:
Small terminal succeeds `37/64` with mean alignment `0.963`, and Medium
terminal succeeds `64/64` with mean alignment `0.999`.

P3 confirmed. Medium L-Reward, Medium L-Mixed `lambda=0.97`, and Medium
L-Mixed `lambda=0.99` all share the `collapse` class and fixed-attractor
signature.

P4 confirmed. The Phase 6 `net.7` causal patch annotation lands exactly on
the Medium `lambda=0.95` / `lambda=0.97` boundary.

## 8. Open Edges

The Medium `lambda=0.5` row is `fragile`, not `hold`: it remains nominally
field-attached but hits the false-basin probe-capture threshold. This cell is
useful for Phase 8 wording because it prevents overclaiming the Medium mixed
curve as uniformly protected.

Two Small low-lambda mixed rows are `ambiguous` because alignment is below the
`hold` threshold without crossing into fixed-attractor collapse. They do not
support the claim and should not be promoted.

Large tier remains unrun. Phase 7 v1 therefore supports a Small/Medium
in-vitro operating-envelope claim only.

## 9. Phase 8 Hand-Off

Phase 8 can safely use this sentence shape:

> In the tested shadow-field navigation family at Small and Medium capacity,
> terminal-signature and mixed-signature controllers preserve field attachment
> across a mapped pocket of selection pressure, with a sharp Medium breach at
> `lambda ~= 0.953`. Above that boundary, high-reward mixed policies collapse
> into the same fixed-attractor class as reward-trained controllers; Phase 6
> localizes the behavioral cliff to an entangled 5D subspace at the actor's
> final hidden layer.

Do not promote this to universal mesa immunity, foundation-model behavior, or
deployed-system robustness. The result is an in-vitro operating-envelope map.

## 10. Versioning

- **v1 (2026-05-12)** - initial result note. Aggregates 22 Small/Medium
  policies, reports zero missing cells, confirms the Medium cliff, and
  attaches Phase 6 `net.7` annotations to the protected/collapsed boundary.
- **Phase 7' retrofit (2026-05-13)** - non-versioning v2 addendum below.
  Mesa v2 traceability labels filed alongside the v1 envelope in
  `cell-traceability-labels.csv`. v1 class column unchanged; v2 ratified
  as a sister doc, not a successor.

## 11. Mesa v2 traceability labels (Phase 7' retrofit, 2026-05-13)

[`SUNDOG_V_MESAV2.md`](../SUNDOG_V_MESAV2.md) Phase 7' lands the
traceability label column on the v1 envelope as a sibling file rather
than a column edit on `cell-class-map.csv`, because the v1 Phase 7
harness regenerates that file. The sibling at
`results/mesa/operating-envelope/cell-traceability-labels.csv` keys on
`policy_id` and carries `traceability_label`, `evidence_anchor`, and
a per-row `note`. The v1 pipeline is not touched.

The exit-criterion question is **what was the system coupled to when
it succeeded (or failed)?** Each label is derived from the existing
Phase 3 probe-slate response and the Phase 4 intervention-battery
matrix; v2 introduces no new training and no new probes.

The four zero-count labels are intentional. They are v2 vocabulary
placeholders for behaviors that the v1 envelope did not exhibit:

- `observation-coupled` requires rotation/translation-only probe
  isolation v1 did not implement.
- `sensor-hacked` and `geometry-hacked` describe active manipulation
  of sensor or geometry channels by the agent. The Phase 4 receipt
  shows the opposite at Medium: canonical L-Reward has essentially
  *stopped* responding to those channels. The labels are reserved for
  the Phase 6.5 counterexample environments (cheap-sensor and
  cheap-geometry conditions) which are explicitly designed to surface
  them.
- `probe-insufficient` is reserved for cells where probes cannot tell.
  v1 had no such cells once the Medium amendment landed; v2's
  counterexample environments are the likely source of any future
  probe-insufficient cells.

### 11.3 Earned reading

Phase 7' confirms the v1 narrative in v2 vocabulary: across the 22-cell
envelope, 9 cells are coupled to the external signature, 7 are coupled
to an internalized reward proxy, 4 never coupled to anything in a
meaningful sense, and 2 are below the resolution of the current probe
slate. The Medium cliff at `λ ≈ 0.953` is the boundary between the
field-coupled and reward-coupled regimes inside the L-Mixed family.

No v1 cell is sensor-hacked or geometry-hacked; v2 owns the
counterexample slate that would generate such cells. The label set
sits ready for those rows when Phase 6.5 lands.
